How will I learn to teach?

The programme is designed to support Trainees in making meaningful connections between theory and practice through the following strategies:

  • A 6 week ‘central training induction’ based in Bransgore Primary School
  • Two 10 week school experiences across a range of settings and age groups
  • Centre-based seminars and workshops
  • Independent and collaborative study
  • Research including small scale school based research, pupil observation, evaluation of learning materials and self selected project work
  • Use of virtual learning environments
  • Scaffolded observation of effective practice
  • Tutorials
  • Peer and self assessment opportunities including video stimulated dialogue.

"I enjoy and learn a lot from how the course is timetabled and am constantly able to link theory and practice".
What are the aims of the programme?
  • To develop in prospective teachers a thorough understanding of the developmental and learning needs of children between the ages of 3 and 7 (Early Years) and 5 and 11 (General Primary)
  • To enable Trainees to achieve the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding for the achievement of Qualified Teacher Status, as defined in ‘Qualifying to Teach’
  • To foster the ability to work as a team member alongside both managers and classroom assistants.
  • To develop in Trainees a professional perspective on the role and responsibilities of the teacher
  • To enable Trainees to develop a reflective approach to their own development as teachers and learners through fostering the attributes of Resourcefulness, Reflectiveness, Reciprocity and Resilience (Claxton 2002).
