South Coast SCITT is a learning community
committed to supporting and engendering a passion for learning in
children, Trainees, School and Centre-based staff.
In collaboration with our Honorary President, Professor Guy Claxton,
and in partnership with the University of Bedfordshire, we seek
to develop individuals who are independent, reflective, creative,
innovative, collaborative and resilient learning centred teachers.
Our Partnership believes that learning leads teaching
and that it encompasses:
‘..the whole person: their attitudes, values, self
image and relationships as well as their skills and strategies…’
(Claxton, 2002)
We believe that effective Early Years and General Primary Practice
has this premise at its core and is fundamental to our learning
principles and to all effective learning and teaching.
We share a common set of SCITT
Learning Principles which underpin the training we offer.
These principles are as follows:-
Children enjoy and achieve when:
- Education starts with what children know, understand
and can do
- There is a safe, effective environment which embraces
every child’s personal context and experiences and challenges
them to succeed
- Activities are well planned and supported by skilled
intervention from adults, and children are actively engaged in
the learning process
- Pedagogy is based on understanding how a child develops
and learns physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially.
The main tenet is that every child learns in numerous ways through
a variety of learning experiences
- Independence and responsibility is
encouraged and children are allowed to make errors, decisions
and choices, and be respected as autonomous learners
- Positive relationships ensure children feel secure,
included and valued
