'A key strength is the personalised approach to training and pastoral care.' (Ofsted, 2010)
South Coast Trainees are very well supported in understanding Course expectations and in developing professional expertise. There is also a strong emphasis on pastoral care.
The SCITT Tutors
A team of highly professional centre-based tutors, each of whom has previous school leadership experience, are responsible for delivery of the majority of the taught Course.
Each member of the team also takes on the role of Personal Tutor to a group of Trainees. Tutors get to know Trainees very well and offer high quality, consistent personalised support throughout the year.

'The team at the SCITT are very supportive and work very hard to help Trainees to succeed. The course is well balanced with very useful and stimulating centre based sessions.' (Trainee, 2011)
During teaching placements each Trainee works alongside their Mentor - the class teacher. All Mentors receive bespoke training in mentoring based on the National Standards for school-based initial teacher training (ITT) mentors(2016).
Our dedicated Mentors, some of whom were previous South Coast Trainees themselves, act in a ‘critical friend’ capacity and are responsible for supporting Trainees’ progress towards the achievement of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
‘The whole school supported me throughout my placement but my Mentor gave me constant support, feedback and guidance that really helped me to continuously identify targets and ways in which to further improve my teaching.’ (Former trainee).
'I had such a positive experience during my first placement. The school was the perfect environment for me- small, close-knit and not too daunting!! As a result the staff were incredibly friendly, always welcomed us into the staff room- I never felt awkward. My mentor couldn’t have been a better mentor- she was very sensitive to my confidence issues in the beginning and never ‘threw me in the deep end’ which would have scuppered what little confidence I did have!! She was patient- helped me endlessly with my planning and only when she saw fit, would she leave me alone with the class! As were the Teaching Assistants - they were so lovely and gave me confidence boosts after every lesson they were present at. May I go back there for my second placement?!' (Former trainee).
