About SCITT
SCHOOL-CENTRED PRIMARY INITIAL TEACHER TRAINING
LEADING TO QTS (QUALIFIED TEACHER STATUS)
AND PGCE (UNIVERSITY OF BEDFORDSHIRE)

This is a one year full-time course for people wishing to qualify as teachers in Primary Schools .

The course is run by a group of local primary schools from Bournemouth, Dorset, Hampshire and Poole, and is directly validated for the award of QUALIFIED TEACHER STATUS (QTS) by the Training & Development Agency for Schools (TDA).

We offer a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education), validated by the University of Bedfordshire.

Trainee teachers spend 60% of their time in school.  Teaching practice occurs in two main schools, but Trainees also have experience of SEN Schools and Childrens' Centres.

During the school placements, the Trainee is supported by an experienced Mentor.  The Mentor works closely with the Trainee to help her/him develop the competences required to qualify as a teacher.

Trainees will learn to plan, teach, prepare resources and to assess, monitor, record and report on children’s learning.  They will learn to organise and manage a classroom to create a secure and effective learning environment.  They will understand what it means to be professionally qualified.

Partnership Schools
An effective management structure, which includes all members of the partnership was recognised by Ofsted as a key strength of the SCITT. The schools in the partnership serve diverse communities including areas of high deprivation, rural, urban and suburban catchments. There are a mix of CofE, Catholic, and non denominational schools. Although the local areas have relatively small numbers of children from ethnically diverse backgrounds all our schools have a strong record of inclusive practice and include Traveller's children and growing numbers of children from migrant workers. A distinctive feature of our partnership schools is their commitment to providing high quality provision, reflected by nationally recognised awards and inspection. Over 40% of our partner schools have been judged as outstanding by Ofsted. 50% of our schools have been members of the SCITT since its inception.

Schools value taking an active part in the SCITT learning community. They benefit from:

Bullet Point

As an Early Years ITT Provider, we are committed to sharing and supporting Best Practice in a diverse range of settings which include Children's Centres, local nursery provision and schools. We share a common set of SCITT Early Years Principles which underpin the training we offer. The SCITT learning community also benefits from close links with other local ITT providers enabling shared training and development opportunities.

Bransgore Primary School is South Coast SCITT's Lead school and our Partnership comprises:-

LEARNING TO TEACH

South Coast SCITT is a learning community committed to supporting and engendering a passion for learning in children, Trainees, school and centre-based staff. In partnership with the University of Bedfordshire, we seek to develop individuals as independent, reflective, creative, innovative, collaborative and resilient people.

The Programme aims to:

  • Develop in prospective teachers a thorough understanding of the developmental and learning needs of children between the ages of 3 and 7
  • Enable Trainees to achieve the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding for the achievement of Qualified Teacher Status, as defined in ‘Qualifying to Teach’
  • Foster the ability to work as a team member alongside both managers and classroom assistants
  • Develop in Trainees a professional perspective on the role and responsibilities of the teacher
  • Enable Trainees to develop a reflective approach to their own development as teachers and learners through fostering the attributes of Resourcefulness, Reflectiveness, Reciprocity and Resilience (Claxton 2002).

South Coast SCITT offers training to Honours graduates to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education with 60 credits at Masters Level (M-level).

At the outset of the course the Central Training Induction (CTI) is based in the SCITT learning centre which benefits from being situated within Bransgore Primary School. This provides an excellent opportunity for Trainees to observe outstanding practice throughout the primary age range. Tutors and teachers are engaged in making explicit the learning journey that children make from Year R to Year 6 and modelling teaching strategies that promote the generic learning attributes and dispositions shared by learners of all stages of development. This practice is extended and enriched through teaching placements in SCITT partnership schools across four local authorities.

Trainees’ knowledge and understanding is developed through a spiral approach to ensure that Trainees build on their prior knowledge and re-visit key areas of learning. In addition, the programme is designed to incorporate enrichment opportunities to support personal and career development. Trainees are encouraged to develop their own personalised learning programme. This supports their development as excellent teachers well equipped to meet the challenges of an ever-changing teaching profession. It is designed to support Trainees in becoming life long learners responsible for shaping their own career development through the setting of aspirational targets.

By use of a blended learning approach the programme is designed to support Trainees in making meaningful connections between theory and practice through the following strategies:

  • practical school experience across a range of settings and age groups
  • seminars and workshops
  • independent and collaborative study
  • research including small scale school based research, pupil observation, evaluation of learning materials and self selected project work
  • use of virtual learning environments (VLE), Breo, Pebblepad and IRIS
  • scaffolded observation of effective practice
  • tutorials
  • lectures
  • peer and self assessment including subject related audits and video stimulated dialogue

This is a very rigorous and demanding course leading to a professional qualification. Successful candidates who achieve Qualified Teacher Status will be eligible to apply for posts in Primary Schools.
